About the game

Historydle is a daily history puzzle. Each day brings a set of clues pointing to a specific year, and the goal is to guess that year in as few attempts as possible.

Every puzzle allows four guesses. Each guess unlocks another clue, and color-coded feedback helps narrow things down: green marks a digit in the right position, yellow a correct digit in the wrong position, and red a digit that isn't part of the answer.

Features

  • Daily puzzles covering historical events from AD 0 to 2025
  • Four guesses per puzzle
  • Color-coded feedback (green, yellow, red)
  • Premium: submit your own puzzles
  • Premium: replay puzzles you missed
  • Wordle-style interface
  • Statistics and progress tracking
  • Learn historical facts as you play

Play Store reception

The app holds a 5.0-star rating on the Google Play Store with 10+ downloads. A few comments from the reviews (translated from German):

  • "Great app, bought premium straight away! One-time payment 👌" – Mirko Z
  • "Fun game that teaches you something. 👍🏻" – Jan Smartphone
  • "made me an objectively better person" – Stefan Grad

Technical implementation

The app is built with React Native and Expo so that a single codebase can target multiple platforms. TypeScript provides type safety and keeps the code maintainable.

Game progress and statistics are stored locally on the device. The app is funded through Google Ads, and premium features are unlocked via in-app purchase.

What I learned

Historydle was the first app I built and published entirely on my own. Along the way I worked on:

  • Integrating Google Ads and monetisation
  • In-app purchases and Google APIs
  • Store optimization and handling user feedback
  • Building premium features
  • Privacy and security requirements
  • Communicating with players
